Lesson activity using podcast
Podcast used from BBC The English We Speak:
Express English
___
Target learners - Year 10 intermediate level
Learner skills - speaking and writing skills
Learning approach - brainstorming, communicative and interactive, think-write-pair-share
Methodology:
Introduce the theme of Podcast: Dreams
Before listening, have students guess the gist of text in relation to their background knowledge. Use prompts for discussions like "What do you think you will listen to?", "What is the meaning of dreams?", etc.
Provide one while-listening task - Identify the things that the people in the conversation dream about.
Students then listen and make notes.
After listen, they share their notes - what types of dreams have they identified.
Ask students what they think about listening to the conversation - student reflection process.
Produce a few worksheets covering vocabulary before going into the paragraph writing.
Vocabulary activity:
A list of words are provided, as students listen for the second time, they identify the order in which the words are mentioned in the podcast.
Paragraph Writing:
Have students write a short paragraph of what they themselves dream about, in five minutes, and then they are to share with a partner. Sharing is in their target language.

Intellectual Property
Today's Part 1 lesson was about finding any copyrights and fair use guidelines in our own country.
So I managed to find the Brunei Emergent Order 1999 pertaining to copyrights law which is similar to US guidelines. Under this Order, rights of copyright owners are stated and any copies made or use of their materials are allowed to the point that permission rights are granted and sufficient acknowledgement to the owner is done.
Fair use or fair dealing as it was called for Brunei case, was also referred to in the Order, however, it was not specifically detailed. Fair dealings in education reflects only on personal research and study as well as in news reporting. Again, sufficient acknowledgement of copyright owner is required when one requires to use their materials.

Brunei Emergent (Copyrights) Order 1999
Part 2 lesson was focusing on more ICT tools to use for tele-collaborative projects with our students. The objective of such projects highlighted the positive cognitive development skills required for students in this 21st century. I find this a wonderful learning opportunity for my students because they like competition and comparing one another, so processes where the learners have to communicate their personal views on particular topics will generate good ideas and challenging interactions.

My first narration
Description of the photo story
My attempt at photo story was not very good, I envied other photostories of ETT which I had a chance to glimpse and they motivated me further to do my very best in using this skill. However, for now, let me briefly explain what I intended to show :)
The title of my photo story was "Making selfies are more fun when there is more than one self".
So the journey of my pictures began with introducing my own selfie which I took in front of Lincoln Hall. I tried very hard to take a good picture of myself with the East West Center logo at the back. I went from individual to pair selfie, and that took a lot more effort in posing since you would want to get the best shot not for yourself but also for the two of you!
Three's a crowd signifies the unwanted being but when it comes to selfie, all you have to do is smile with the growing number of people in your selfie. Ultimately, the more the merrier, as everyone tries to crowd together to get into the camera shot. In the end, taking selfies with a lot of people make them closer and connect better to get the best memorable picture, as my last picture tells you. So, don't forget to smile when you are in a group selfie.
Aloha and Mahalo.
Say Hi to my avatar :)
So this is my Voki which I have just created today. I am grateful for the knowledge gained, and I hope I will use this skill in my classroom with my students...Yeayy!!
The steps in creating this avatar definitely produces a learning motivation for my students, since it involves students to make their own choices, not only on what the avatar has to look like or to wear but also challenges students to think and create words or sentences for the avatars to say.
Involving the students in producing the work for a lesson really will alert their interest to be a better and smarter learner overall. I am loving every moment in using and applying this gadget. Thank you, Dr Marta & Grant for all the help.

Hawaii Debut
For the requirement of movie making with Dr Marta in ICT class, I am now sharing my very first video of using WMM. Ta daaaaa
It is possible though that my movie debut did not do justice to what I wanted to convey, but the essence of my message is mainly that for all I have endured to be in this programme, I will always appreciate the knowledge and interaction made with all sorts of people I meet in UBD and Hawaii. It is truly the best life-learning experience gained during the programme - to have met and known and shared with all those people coming from different perspectives and experiences. In a way, the experience in the programmes have helped shape me to become who I am now and who I can become. Thank you, my Asean Ohana.

Aloha from Hawaii

Another day in Hawaii means another day for blessing.
Feeling thankful everyday for this rare opportunity to be in a place where the people and the culture is all about sharing. Aloha is the life here in Hawaii and I am grateful for the experience Hawaii has shared with me.
Background to my life
Hi everyone and anybody who is tuning into my blog..My name is Julia from Brunei Darussalam.
I did say ALOHA earlier and that means Hello in Hawaii. Yes, it is true, I am in Hawaii - doing my time of studying for one beautiful month, in this beautiful part of the planet. How did I get here? Well, I am one of the lucky 70 ASEAN participants following the Brunei-US English Language Enrichment Programme 2014. We began our 11-weeks journey from Universiti Brunei Darussalam for seven weeks and ends at East West Center in Hawaii for four weeks.
